As an actress, artist and poet, Camila's work explores boundaries and cross-overs in both content and form, on and off the page, stage, live & screen-based. The recent focal point of her practice has been the spoken word, leading to a series of projects based on her poetry - from performances at literary festivals to interactive installations in theatres, galleries and unlikely nooks and crannies across London. The playful, and often participatory nature of these installations - most recently the 'story-trailing' games she has set up - encourage integration and are a celebration of creativity and the right to share our voices.
'Camila's work speaks of
mischievousness, attention to detail & fantastic showladyship. Her
attention to the most finite of details is breathtaking and makes
experiencing one of her performances a true immersive pleasure. Her
pieces explore the cross over of theatre, live art, spoken
word, intervention and sculpture with the curiosity and
bravery of Alice as she heads down the rabbit hole wondering where
it will take her.'
- Sarah Grainger-Jones & Lili Spain, curators of the Red
Velvet Curtain Cult. The Trail So Far... Storming the Whitechapel Gallery, Shunt Lounge, Southwark Playhouse and various charity, educational and development projects as the hat-wearing, story sharing Damsel Dusty, Camila has been performing her poetry and hosting a 'Mad Hatters Brain-Storm + A Tea Cup Party'. Dusty, a displaced damsel, lives a sort of nomadic existence out of bags and boxes, sharing snippets of her stories and collecting those of others everywhere she goes. She sets up temporary abodes in each new venue and participants follow a path made of over-sized jigsaw pieces to join in collective brain-storming over cups of the letter 'T'. They are invited to contribute to story trails, and in doing so help to decorate Dusty's make-shift home. Along with her precious trinkets, vintage chintzy bits and tea-set paraphernalia, she is usually accompanied by her beloved inanimate companion 'Berty Mind'. Players are welcomed to get out of their heads and inside him to intimately listen to a selection of poems, confessions and fragmented narratives, and set their creative juices flowing. Damsel Dusty was born from Camila's ongoing exploration of the ambiguous space between tangible binaries... writer/ performer, performer/character, factual and imagined realities, secrecy/exposure, old/new, found and made materials, artist/ spectator, performer/participant. Following on from the success of Dusty's adventures so far, Camila was invited to be part of Oxjam Brixton, where she performed some of her mischievous poetic provocations, and invited the public to join in a collective brain-storming story trail. They also had the opportunity to contribute to the Languastical Dictionary (a fantastical dictionary of lingual gymnastics) that Camila is compiling.
